The M-flex Multifocal IOL

Cezón J

Sevilla (Spanien)

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy, safety, predictability and stability
of the M-flex (Rayner) multifocal lens (IOL) in pseudophakic eyes
after cataract and clear lens phacoemulsification in hyperopic and
presbyopic patients. Initial results with the new Toric Multifocal
Lens M-flex-T are also presented. Methods: A prospective, non-randomized,
observational study in 61 eyes of 43 patients implanted
with the M-flex IOL and operated by the same surgeon was performed.
The mean follow-up was 12 months (range: 3 – 20 months).
Data were collected with Datagraph-med 3.20-d. Changes in Uncorrected
Visual Acuity (UCVA), Best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA),
Refraction over time, refractive outcome, Defocus Equivalent, Uncorrected
(UCNVA) and Best Corrected Near Vision (BCNVA) and Uncorrected
Intermediate Vision at 65 cm. (UIV) were recorded. Complications
were noted. Results: UCVA was 0.8 or better in all the
cases. The Defocus equivalent was 0.5 diopters or less in all the
cases. At 1 year only 20% of patients reach J1 without addition
glasses, 60% reach J3, 80% reach J5. The mean addition needed to
reach J1 was 1.5 diopters. UIV at one year was 0.8 or better in 75% of
cases. No one patient lost lines of vision. Complications were: monocular
diplopia (1 case), significant halos (1 case), undercorrection (1
case), overcorrection (1 case). Conclusion: The M-flex IOL is safe,
stable and predictable. Distance vision and intermediate vision are
excellent. Near vision is acceptable as a “social reading lens”.
