To assess the safety and efficiency of the Tecnis ZCB00, a new asphalteneic IOL from hydrophobic acrylate. In this prospective study, 53 patients with cataract were included and received a Tecnis ZCB00 1-piece IOL. For the follow-up investigation after 3 months the best and uncorrected television reports were collected. In addition, a defocus curve, contrasts, as well as a wavefront analysis for different pupil sizes were performed. In the 3-month study, the spherical equivalent was -0.12 ± 0.47dpt. The mean best-corrected distance vision was logMar -0.05 ± 0.08 and uncorrected LogMar 0.11 + 0.18. The wavefront analysis showed a significantly reduced total spherical aberration of 0.012 ± 0.052 at 5 mm and 0.002 ± 0.021 at 3 mm pupil width. The spherical equivalent showed no myopic shift at greater pupillary width (-0.48 ± 0.62 vs. -0.45 ± 0.7). The contrast sensitivity was also independent of the pupil width. DieTecnis ZCB00 shows improved optical performance especially at larger pupil diameters. The residual spherical aberration remains close to 0 under meso light conditions. Functionally, the asphalic IOL profile provides excellent visual results. In addition, there was no relevant myoper shift under dolomite light or an influence on the depth of the cue.
