Teaching the use of a toric Verisyse phakic intraocular lens
Kohnen T
Universitäts-Augenklinik Frankfurt a. M., Houston/TXWorldwide most of the refractive procedures are performed on the cornea either as lamellar (LASIK) or surface (PRK, LASEK, Epi-LASIK) procedures, but in high refractive errors the correction with phakic IOLs is more advantageous. If the combination of myopia or hyperopia with high amounts of astigmatism should be corrected as refractive error, toric phakic IOLs may be used. The iris-fixated IOLs have shown good rotational stability and therefore are privileged to correct astigmatic errors. In this video, the indication, the technique and the peri-operative handling are demonstrated. Very important steps are the preoperative examination, correct marking of the astigmatic axis, intraoperative handling and placement in the correct angle and the postoperative management particularly in hyperopic toric lenses. With the use of the toric Verisyse phakic IOL, a good correction of large amounts of ametropia and astigmatism can be achieved.
