Optic capture: why, when and how?
Kim WS
Maryknoll Hospital Dept. of Ophthalmology Pusan/ROK

Purpose: To evaluate and the safety, applicability and efficacy of the optic capture during various cataract surgeries. Methods: Tight optic capturing was performed to achieve complete compartmentalization in cases with pediatric/juvenile cataract, uveitis cataract, torn posterior capsule. Secondary optic capturing was performed when PCO occurs after pediatric cataract surgery. Safety of the optic capturing was evaluated with fluorescein angiography. Results: In our review of 197 eyes (pediatric cataract: 35 eyes, uveitis cataract:
45 eyes, juvenile and presenile cataract: 92 eyes, secondary optic capture: 21 eyes, posterior capsular break: 4 eyes) that have been followed for more than 1 year, we could not find any recurrence of visual axis obscuration or other sight threatening complications. Conclusions: When performed properly, optic capturing is the only and best way to prevent posterior capsular opacity.
